No, we are not surgeons saving lives in the ER, nor trial attorneys defending the righteousness of innocents. We are the Realtors who represent clients on their real estate investments. However, quite often, juggling in this arena, I feel I’m holding the lives in my hands.

Every transaction has its challenge, and every challenge could lead to further complication. Recently, a client needed to sell his current home in order to buy the new one. As his agent, I needed to make a detailed plan, facilitate, and coordinate with all professionals who were involved in this process, including the buyer’s broker, buyer’s lender, builder, title, and others. When timing matters everything, there are always hiccups along the road. In this scenario, it was the buyer’s lender, not communicative and stuck with the “delay” on a regular basis, as if he was on a clock in Mars. My client needed to sell the current house to purchase the new one. So, the delay of the closing “current” is the delay of the “future,” and not to mention the accumulated costs associated with it. I worked with all parties trying to get a response out of this muted lender. My frustration was overflowing the bank of emotion.

Recently I had an interview with Chris O’Byrne of Pivot magazine. At the end he asked me for wisdom advice to others. My answer was “always connect with ourselves.” I said I believe everyday taking a few minutes of connecting and reflecting with myself helped to clarify my vision of the past, present and future. So, what did I learn by practicing it during such a difficult time? Spontaneously, I’d like to fly over to bomb the whole office of that lender. Second thought, that plan wouldn’t work. Because if the lender was gone, we would surely hit the rock bottom. So, the only option we had, for both of our seller and buyer, was to do whatever we could and from all angles to push through it, and by that, I meant, call his “sphere of influence,” such as fraternity brothers or even his cousin, whomever could knock a word out of him.

For however many years I’ve been in the business, I learned how to get up from facing down the ground, the cliché of “failure is the mother of success,” right? Not exactly applicable to how I felt in this situation. Because it was not about me anymore. It was not about whether I failed or succeeded. It was about my client’s life, to move on to his next chapter and be happily ever after. I was the one to guide, lead and seal the deals for him. I couldn’t let it fail. To make it happen was not only the goal but the only option.

With that in mind, working through the broiling emotion of all kinds for an extra extended period. And finally in the bright sunlight of that middle of the day, my phone rang, “mute” converted to “sound,” he said: “We’ve got the ‘Clear to Close.’”

Hearing that, breathing in the moment, was the only response I had.
