Rodeo Season in Houston

Rodeo season officially starts with the Cookoff, and for those that have never been I will just tell you that it is one big party.  All of the cookoff teams have a full weekend that starts on Thursday and goes until they pack up on Sunday.  The teams cook all weekend and get judged on several categories Brisket, chicken and ribs to name a few.  The rigs that some of these guys show up with are custom built and there is no telling how much they have invested (if you show up with your back yard grill just be warned that there will be laughter).

The first week in March usually kicks off the rodeo, and if you have never had the chance to go, then I recommend you go and check it out.  There is definitely nothing like it at all, and it has something for everyone.  There is a carnival for kids and adults alike.  There is of course the livestock show, which the kids that show work extremely hard on all year long (this aspect did not get talked about near enough when the decision was made to cancel the rodeo the last two years).  There are several vendors that are set up, and a lot of their yearly income comes from the Houston LSR.  Of course, the rodeo itself is very popular, my two favorite events are the bull riding and the mutton busting.  Then after the rodeo there is a different artist every night, and if country music isn't your thing, don't worry, there are plenty of other genres that preform.  Get out and enjoy the rodeo if you are in town.  It is definitely an experience you will not forget.
